Counselling
There can sometimes be confusion about the difference between Psychotherapy and Counselling. There are many similarities and overlaps between the two, but put simply, Counselling tends to be focused on specific themes over a shorter-term period. Typically, it aims to support someone through a particularly difficult life event.
Psychotherapy is a longer-term process which is organic in its nature. It tends to explore many themes at greater depth throughout the process and is concerned with roots of a person, recurring issues, growth and lasting change or healing.
For more detailed information at how both can help see here.
In terms of training and qualification, the key difference is that psychotherapy training is longer in duration and typically involves the therapist attending their own personal therapy for the duration of the training. This promotes self awareness and ethical practice.
Most often, I tend to work with clients interested in longer term therapy but I can adapt my approach if clients are seeking a time-limited process. We can discuss this in our first meeting.
